ACTIVITIES FOR YOUR KIDS IN LOCKDOWN: FEW TIPS TO CONSIDER

SPEND QUALITY TIME WITH FAMILY

After a long hectic schedule of academic studies year long, the most awaited time of the summer holidays arrived! Suddenly one fine morning people realised they are under house arrest. Overnight their aspirations have turned into dismay. No extracurricular activity classes, no outdoor playing, no picnics, no visiting friends or relatives! It is definitely a very annoying feeling for your kids.

However you can make good use of this opportunity as a time for family bonding. Throughout the year the kids are busy with their studies and home work while the parents are busy with their work and activities. Now you have an incredible opportunity to spend some quality time with each other so that love and bonding between all family members grows manifold.

CLEAR THE CONFUSION IN YOUR KIDS MIND ABOUT LOCKDOWN:

Explain to your kids the reason why the whole world has gone under isolation, resulting in lockdown because of COVID-19. Explain the importance of the restrictions imposed during this lockdown. If you explain them with reasoning, you will be surprised to see them comply, more effectively than adults, as they are more adaptive.

Explain to them that it is not a vacation time as all are going through tough time. However the good thing is that both the parents are at home and can spend time with the kids, which can make things a little easier for them. You can utilize their spare time more productively by little planning.

Below are few ideas and suggestions on deriving benefits during the lockdown period:

1. MAKE THEM MORE DISCIPLINED:

Instead of imposing restrictions, try to make the children more disciplined. Develop the habit of doing exercise, as it makes them more active and can improve their concentration. Maintain timetable, set a routine for mealtime and bedtime.

2. MAINTAIN HYGIENE:

Use the opportunity to teach and develop in them good habits related to personal hygiene. Emphasize the importance of washing hands and keeping themselves clean. Also involve the kids in cleaning the house and keeping everything neat and tidy.

3. INVOLVE THEM IN HOUSE CHORES:

Engage them in household duties, as the house maid is probably not coming to your house. Give them the responsibility of doing their own work like cleaning their own beds and rooms, arranging all stuff in proper places, etc. Let them help you out in small household chores as is suitable according to their age. You may be surprised how quickly they can learn new things and become proficient in them. So do not underestimate your kids thinking they are too young and you should probably let them grow up a little before assigning any household work.

Some parents think that doing house work may interfere with kid’s studies. That is not true. In fact, being involved in house work can make them sharper, develop a sense of responsibility in them, make them more confident individuals and make them feel happy and grown-up as they are working together with elders.

4. NURTURE THEIR HIDDEN TALENT:

All kids are gifted with some talent. Some are good at crafts , others may be good at storytelling, while others may enjoy reading. So allow time for your kids to explore and engage in activities which they love to do, as this can help to uncover and nurture their hidden talents.

5. ENGAGE THEM IN EDUCATIONAL GAMES AND ACTIVITIES:

You can engage kids in different games which are designed to stimulate their brain and sharpen their memory, enhance creativity, develop critical thinking skills in them. There are many such games which can help in improving learning skills. Examples of such games are as follows – Scrabble, Building Blocks, Jigsaw Puzzles, etc. You can even ask kids to solve puzzles or riddles suitable for their age group.

Such activities can be fun and engaging. As kids get bored and not know what to do with the time on their hands, such activities can help in driving away their boredom and simultaneously sharpening their brains.

6. TEACH ABOUT ISLAM

This lockdown period is an excellent time to teach kids about Islam, specially during the holy month of Ramazan. Tell them stories of prophets, teach them about the lives of sahaba and other important Islamic personalities, teach them about different teachings of Quran as is suitable for their age groups, preach about the importance of offering salah and the importance of good manners and helping others.

7. INCULCATE THE HABIT OF READING:

Set aside some time daily for the kids to engage in reading. You may set aside 30 minutes initially which can then be increased after few days to 1-2 hours of reading time daily. Reading is a very good habit to cultivate. However make sure you select the right books for the kids to read.

RESPONSIBILITY OF PARENTS

It is a big responsibility of parents to ensure your kids are getting proper training and education, at home and at school. You need to teach kids proper manners by leading from example. Kids learn by watching their parents and elders.

At the same time you should also choose a good school where the kids can learn life lessons in a proper manner at the hands of well-trained, loving and dedicated teachers.
